Podcast #80: The Plight of Hindus Under the Nizam of Hyderabad

In this episode of The Dharma Podcast, we unearth some carefully-buried truths of the appalling oppression of Hindus and their miserable plight under the rule of the Nizams of Hyderabad. These are truths of fairly recent history that almost no mainstream book of history or popular narratives will tell you.

Indeed, the mention of Hyderabad or its Nizam today evokes only vague memories of the integration of princely states into the Indian Union, Operation Polo, the Nizam's fabulous wealth and other elements.

However, truly horrific tales of Hindu persecution are buried beneath all these memories. The liberation of Hyderabad in 1948 was not only an urgent necessity but a civilisational recovery for the Hindus who formed 87% of the population there.

The spirit of Hindus under his regime had truly fallen into the pits. This reality also fuelled the Nizam’s fantasy of becoming the head of the entire Muslim world. The founding charter of the Osmania University was, in Munshi’s words, “to attract fanatic Muslim scholars and bring up a race of young educated Muslims indoctrinated with the Muslim conquistador spirit. It spent large sums of money to make Urdu a language of power.”
