Contemplations on the Eighth Anniversary of the Dharma Dispatch

On the eighth anniversary of The Dharma Dispatch, here is a brief retrospect of our sacred civilisational journey so far.

THE DHARMA DISPATCH turned eight last month. In keeping with a tradition we began last year, we are making the anniversary announcement during the auspicious Parva of Navaratra. Today is especially sacred for us given that the Hindu Samaja celebrates Saraswati Puja. Among other things, The Dharma Dispatch is dedicated to performing lifelong Sārasvata-sevā. We regard it as a sacred duty incumbent upon every Hindu—to preserve, transmit and safeguard learning, literature, art and the intellectual and spiritual heritage of Bharatavarsha.

या देवी सर्वभूतेषु विद्यारूपेण संस्थिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥

namas tasyai namas tasyai namas tasyai namo namaḥ ||

As with every year, things have been rather unremarkable at The Dharma Dispatch. Which is how we like it—silent, sedate and serene. To borrow a distinguished writer’s line, “nothing of lasting value was ever accomplished in a large, busy place.” Our Rishis obtained their most profound philosophical visions in spartan cottages; Maharshi Valmiki composed the Srimad Ramayana on a river bank. While we cannot physically recreate those environments, we can certainly imbibe that spirit.

And now, we get to our other annual ritual: of stock taking. A significant change over the last year is a thorough redesign of the The Dharma Dispatch website. We’ve also added a new option to Subscribe to our content so you can get our essays, podcasts and announcements directly in your email inbox. We’re more than happy to inform that our subscriber base has shot up by more than 10,000 members this year alone. A hearty welcome to all the new entrants into The Dharma Dispatch family!

IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER, the following is the list of the top ten essays that our readers loved the most this year.

  • The most widely read essay this year is our semi-scholarly exposition titled A Century of Leftist Child Abuse Births a CJP.  This remains our most-read essay till date.
  • Compared to the recency of its publication, our long form tracing the Chalukya-Suryavamsha lineage of the Bhutto surname continues to attract significant readership.
  • Close on its heels is this piece on the founding of the Calcutta Sanskrit College by the East India Company.
  • A surprising entrant is this brief podcast discussing the downfall of Hindu parenting after the so-called liberalisation. Going by the comments and feedback we’ve received, it appears to have struck a raw nerve somewhere.
  • Another bestseller is our detailed politico-historical analysis of the Bengal elections which spectacularly dethroned Mamata Banerjee.
  • Oh! And speaking of Bengal, our dissection of Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali seems to have generated a mix of outrage, kudos and endorsement. The outrage quotient prompted an ex-IAS officer to write a rebuttal to the piece.
  • Since we’re on films and such, this lengthy expose showing A.R. Rahman’s true character as a fanatical communalist also generated both brickbats and bouquets. A longer podcast on the same topic invited personal abuse as well.
  • Another bestseller was our deep-dive on the full extent of Gandhi’s pampering of Muslim League bigots like the Ali Brothers and dyed-in-the-wool communalists like Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan. The popularity that this essay received was truly surprising even for us.
  • A similar surprise is the huge traction that our investigation into the historical downfall of the Mysore University received. It came as a pleasant shock that even today, there is indeed a readership for such topics.
  • While this essay is ranked tenth in this list, its popularity is rather high: The Lost Grandeur of Vidiśā: Ancient India’s Epicenter of Dharma, Trade, and Empires. Its vast readership is a heartening indicator to say the least.

As promised last year, we have renewed our focus on offering podcasts on a wide range of topics on The Dharma Dispatch YouTube channel. At the moment, we try to publish at least one episode a week and will most probably stick to this schedule. The following is the list of our top ten  Podcasts:

This completes our stock-taking on the eighth anniversary of The Dharma Dispatch.

It is both our duty and joy to inform you that an overwhelming number of readers, students, teachers and distinguished men and women from various walks of life reached out to us, expressing their good wishes and sincere encouragement. And as always, we offer our heartfelt gratitude to all our donors who continue to support our journey and value our civilisational vision. All of you are, in your own, inestimable ways, are an inseparable part of The Dharma Dispatch family.

On this anniversary, we would also like to reaffirm our lifelong commitment and dedication to this sacred work of civilisational rediscovery and reclamation—one essay, one podcast at a time. At some point, it will, we are sure, grow into the soul-nurturing, shade-giving and eternal, Akshaya Vata-Vruksha.

Oh! And please accept our heartfelt Navaratri wishes. May the Devi in all her forms bestow health, prosperity and abundance upon your family.

Lastly, we have the customary request from all of you. The Dharma Dispatch seeks your voluntary contributions to help us offer more back to the Sanatana community. You can contribute in the following ways:
